It's really the perfect ultralight freestanding solo backpacking tent

I haven't actually used my Mirage 1P yet, but I have had the Mirage 2P for 4 or 5 years and it's the same design, albeit a bit larger and heavier than the 1P. I am a big proponent of single wall tents because they're lighter and, since the "tent" is already connected to the "rain fly", it sets up easily and the inner tent will not get wet if you need to set up in the rain. However, most of these single wall tents are NOT freestanding. I have frequently hiked used a non-freestanding tent and they can be great, but there are times when a freestanding tent is much better - for example, when camping on rock or rocky soils, or when you need the tent to fit into a small space. This is where the Mirage tents (1P and 2P) come in very handy. In the case of the 1P, I can also see that it will be very nice to have 2 vestibules for one person. Not only can you open up both sides for max ventilation, but in bad weather it will be super nice to have two separate storage areas for your pack, boots, wet clothing, etc. In fact, you can fill up one vestibule with virtually all your gear and the other can remain unobstructed for easy egress/ingress. AND, on top of all the great aspects of the design, these tents are very well made. Honestly, at 34 oz to get all this, you MUST give it 5 stars.

Best Designed Tent Ever

I’ve been backpacking for some 45 years and have owned too many tents to count, from a wide variety of manufacturers. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve looked to decrease size and weight of the tents I carry. The Big Sky Mirage 1P is hands down my favorite for a variety of reasons.

Its small size still accommodates my wide 25” mat and the extra long floor easily holds all my gear and food by stacking at the head and foot without crowding. I am 5’8” tall and the tent has lots of headroom. But its overall small footprint allows it to fit into tiny pieces of real estate that most other tents can’t go. Less time wasted at the end of long days searching for a camp spot. The double doors are so convenient and well worth the few extra ounces. Speaking of ounces, at just over two pounds, you’d have to go Dynema fabric and spent at least twice as much to shave a few ounces.

This free standing tent will pitch in less than two minutes! Seriously fast. I’ve been in this tent over two years now and it is very stable and versatile. Cool and airy in summer and sheds 6” snow storms in winter. High winds have been no problem with the extra guys deployed.

You will not find a better design for a light weight, 3 season tent at this price range. I highly recommend it to everyone.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • could you use this during winter time? say the midwest of the US?

the Mirage tent series is 3-seasons rated... it has ultra light weight (thinner wall) poles that may not be strong enough for snow loads and its vestibules are not supported so may collapse under a snow load.

  • - What is the pole length (folded)? - When will it be available in 2022? Thanks!
